No, that’s not true. C’mere track. Come on back now. It’s ok. I didn’t mean it, honest. I should say, rather, that I have a healthy (if occasionally bordering-on-an-unbridled-rage) respect for that black oval fixture at high schools, colleges, and the occasional, out-of-touch health club all across our nation. The track, assessed when I’m not threatening to cough up alveoli going around it at high speeds, is a marvelous thing of implacable beauty, I think. If you look quite carefully, with

Spreed makes reading RSS feeds faster, stressful August 1st, 2008 Web based RSS feed aggregator Spreed is casual reading’s worst enemy. A speed reader extraordinaire like Robert Scoble might enjoy it as a way to dig through even more stories a day, but at its heart it’s kind of like visiting an aquarium with one of those moving sidewalks; you’re still seeing what you came there to see–you just don’t have the luxury of taking your time. Time is actually the key focus of Spreed. It centers a

Hier gibt es knapp über 1.000 km Straßennetz, die ich im laufe der nächsten Monate mal abfahren werde. I have written a couple of posts about 7-8 months back (here and here) on how to call stored procedures from a rails application. After using stored procedures in my app for a while I started to think about whether we really need them. So over a couple of months I discussed it (mainly short discussions about stored procedures not whether to use them or not) with my colleagues, friends, other people and gave some thought to it. If you are new to stored procedures then here is a sort of textb

Directions Magazine has a short write up on GeoJSON (Geographically-enabled JavaScript Object Notation), which, like it’s cousins XML and KML, is a data-interchange format that can be manipulated by any language. It turns out, though, that GeoJSON is extremely JavaScript friendly (it’s right there in it’s name!) and would work well with any JavaScript web client like the Yahoo! or Google Maps APIs. If you’re interested in learning more about the guts of GeoJSON, this article is a good place to

Inner cell mass (ICM) cells of the blastocyst can make any type of body cell. Gastrula-stage cells can give rise to the cells of a given germ layer. Later, cells become even more restricted. For example, the pancreatic bud of the endoderm layer can only make the cells of the pancreas.

The changes to Google Maps are subtle but nice. Specifically, the Directions feature has been moved down to the left and now sits next to your My Maps tab. The Directions interface is also changed to accommodate the new placement on the page. The column tab for hiding the left hand column is now at the top of the column and is more obvious (I circled the tab in red below to really make it obvious). Previously, it was just a small little triangle midway down the column that casual users probably

Had porridge and Fairtrade coffee, walked up to the bus stop, hot and sticky weather — scribbling in my moleskine and feeling a little desperate about the writing not coming together quickly enough, the slow pace of recovery, how clueless I feel much of the time, insecure and travelling through uncharted territory. Sat and looked at at hot golden fields, hollyhocks in profusion, the brilliant scarlet flowers of the runner beans winding up their trellises. To the library where I took out a

Recently there have been rumblings in the space about the propensity of the Sportstracker app to freeze at random, but the guys at The Nokia E71 blog have reported a possible fix. The problem seems to have been that after a few minutes, or a few kilometres of ‘active tracking’, the app would freeze, rendering all data useless (especially if you were about to beat your time for your jogging route). There’s no official fix for this problem, despite the Beta Labs team being fully aware of it, but

A lot of people ask my opinion on whether they should use mind mapping software instead of pen and paper. In most cases I usually recommend the person stick with pen and paper. In all the time I have been mind mapping I have very rarely used any mind mapping software. I have tried various software packages, but I haven’t found the need to rush out and buy any of the commercial options or use any of the open source solutions available. There is a place for each way of mind mapping, but it sh

The guys at New GPS Reviews have been quite literally test driving the Nokia 500 Auto Navigation system and found that it can be used for more than just getting you to your final destination. By utilising the integrated music player (which also has an FM transmitter, allowing you to play your own music through your car stereo), and the ability to view photographs and videos when stuck in traffic or during rest stops, no one can play the ‘bored’ card. Build-wise, this unit gets the thumbs up, f

I was reading an article in the glossy magazine of a Sunday paper yesterday and I came across a mention of Mind Mapping in relation to learning languages. Tony Buzan has had written a series of books looking at using ideas like Mind Mapping and memory techniques to help people learn a language and this was making mention of those. Of course as a thinking tool, the use of Mind Mapping elevates all aspects of thought but it is especially powerful for learning. Here are just a suggestion of how
