Are SMBs confused about new online marketing strategies? A recent article on the Sf Chronicle sparked up quite a few reactions on the blogosphere. At the center of the debate is Yelp, a San Francisco-based platform for user-generated reviews of small businesses: Last week, Yelp purged an undisclosed number of accounts after finding that the business owners had swapped positive reviews with other business owners. Yelp also regularly deletes reviews it believes are phony. The move sparked an out

Discussion revolving around a planned, but retracted article on GIS for Professional Surveyor Magazine has led to a lot of interesting discussion, but to me generally reveals a continuing underlying tension and misperceptions between the GIS and Surveying communities. I’ve been experimenting with HDR post-processing for a little while now and I’ve already put up a few images that you can see at HDR Photography. I use Photomatix Pro to apply the tone mapping and while it does add some vibrant colour to what are often initially bland images, they still are not the super surreal, in your face, completely over the top photos that I thought I could achieve. A good example of what I’m talking about can be found at PhotoFencePhotography.com. Fortunately I re

I continued my mapping work and I laid out the basics of my first demo. Some rooms with simple lighting, as the design phase must be quick. The next steps will be adding detail to the level, optimizing the brushes, testing the behaviour and finally, texturing.

So, I’ve got more mapping tests, the Room is now complete, and further level design had been initiated. It’s really hard doing reference work, as the level must have a consistent look. Well, tons of pages may be written on this subject, so I’ll just post the Room mapping tests.

For business executives in any business, before they use mindmapping they need one simple question answered: “How will this help me improve my bottom line?” Stu Schmidt, Vice President for professional services at Cisco WebEx, is no different. He asked how mindmapping could improve his bottom line and then developed a solution with Mindjet MindManager that showed it could. According to a business case study that focused on how WebEx incorporated MindManager into their business processes: “

It is like waiting for a bus…nothing happens for a while and then 3 turn up all at once. Earlier this week I mentioned in a post I had found a great site that reviews Mind Mapping Software. Well unbeknown to me there are other sites out there too that provide great information about using Mind Map software. I think by luck I came across the grand daddy of them all after I wrote that last post. …mmmm….perhaps I am over stating my contribution to that raised awareness of this other great site

I know tons of people in the the real estate business. One person in particular, whose name I will not mention, runs properties in their own state as well as out of state. But they only have just a few employees who do not travel to the other properties. So, needless to say, in take care of other, tenant-free, homes in other states, this unknown person has to do the traveling themselves. Beyond management, this person also tries to get me to look up listed properties for sale in my hometown. I

Google is getting ready to launch their Street View technology in the UK, and it isn’t being met with open arms. Although the mapping tool is already in place in some major US cities, folks in the UK are protesting the implementation on their turf. Street View works by taking photos of, logically enough, streets to match maps. However the photos also include any people on those streets. This is where the problems come in for the UK folk. They feel this is a blatant disregard for privacy

There are many times during your online graphic design career where you will find that graphic design actually intersects with another discipline and if you learn a little bit about the other discipline, you can actually find more clients. One such area is called Geographic Information Systems, where graphic design intersects with mapping. While a large part of GIS as it is known in short form has to do with statistics and mapping analysis, there is also a large part of it that is based on t
